7 Coffee Myths Debunked
It seems that with the invention of the internet over two decades ago, came a lot of misinformation. After all, nearly anyone can write anything on the web and claim that it is true. As professional coffee roasters, we have a problem with this, as there are a ton of myths floating around in the modern world about coffee. Seeing as how we work with coffee day in and day out, we like to think that we know more than the majority of people out there who are making outlandish claims about our favorite beverage. With that said, check out the myths below and learn the truth about each.
Drinking coffee late in the day will make you unable to sleep at night.
Due to the fact that coffee contains caffeine, most people think this myth to be undeniably true. However, it is actually false. While caffeine is absolutely a stimulant, having a cup of Joe right after your lunch break will mean that it is quickly processed through your liver, resulting in the majority of it being flushed out of your body in a period of four to seven hours. This means, that unless you need to be asleep by 7pm every night, you’ll probably be just fine drinking your afternoon pick-me-up java.
Coffee will sober you up.
While this may have been a trick you learned from the movies, there is plenty of science to prove that this myth is inherently false. The American Psychological Association conducted studies to see whether or not giving coffee to an intoxicated person would help to sober them up. While it did make the test subjects feel more awake, it did not diminish the effects of the alcohol that was already in their systems.
Coffee can assist you in losing weight.
Some people think that because of the rich taste that coffee can act as an appetite suppressant, therefore aiding people on their mission to lose weight. We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but this is also another myth. While coffee can suppress your appetite, the effects only last for very short periods of time, certainly not long enough for anyone to see noticeable weight loss in the long run.
Coffee will stunt your growth.
At some point in your life, someone older than you informed you that drinking a lot of coffee would result in you being short. This is absolutely not true. On the other hand, it is smart to maintain a diet that includes a good amount of vitamin D and calcium so that you don’t develop osteoporosis later on in life, which actually will have you growing in reverse.
You cannot drink any coffee at all when you are pregnant.
While this is best practice according to physicians, there is not any true scientific evidence to prove that coffee can cause any harm to a fetus. With that said, we wouldn’t recommend that you drink more than one cup of coffee per day if you are expecting, as there is no proof that drinking coffee while pregnant doesn’t result in extremely hyperactive babies.
Coffee is easy to become addicted to.
While this is a common idea among tea drinkers, we beg to differ. Even if you were to have multiple cups of coffee per day, the chances of you becoming addicted are slim to none. While you may experience a slight withdrawal were you to quit cold turkey, the effects would only last a day or two and then you would be back to normal. Why anyone would ever want to stop drinking coffee is beyond us though.
All coffee contains the same amount of caffeine.
If you know anything about coffee at all, you probably already know that this is false. After all, someone who gets a coffee at Burger King one day and then gets coffee at Starbucks the next day can tell a difference between the two.
